About this image:

The image above, entitled "Solar System Montage" was created February 1, 1996 from planetary images taken by spacecraft managed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, CA. Included are (from top to bottom) images of Mercury, Venus, Earth (and Moon), Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Pluto is not shown. The spacecraft responsible for these images are as follows:

  • the Mercury image was taken by Mariner 10,

The NASA Photojournal Image Collection

NASA's Planetary Photojournal was developed by the Imaging Node of the Planetary Data System, in cooperation with the Solar System Visualization Project and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory's Public Affairs Office. The Photojournal, aimed at a broad user community (everyone from school children to science publishers and researchers), is designed to provide easy access to high quality, processed planetary images that have been press-released by NASA and other institutions. Using the Photojournal, you can browse images, read the associated captions, and download the image data in a number of different sizes and formats. Links are provided to allow you to access companies from which hardcopy products can be ordered.

As active flight missions acquire new images of the planets in our solar system, the images are made available through the Photojournal at the same time they are released to the press. We also provide links to popular web sites that provide more information about the planets and some of the science acquired by the flight missions. An effort is currently underway to backfill the system with data from older missions. Currently, over 1600 images are available and more are being added every day.
