    From the Executive Summary to the report: "The adoption of software has led to significant advances in research. But if we do not change our research practices, the continued rise in software use will be accompanied by a rise in retractions. Ultimately, anyone who is concerned about the reliability and reproducibility of research should be concerned about software sustainability. This argument alone may rely too much on the stick and not enough on the carrot. To that end, we must also show that software sustainability promises to identify and make available the software that is most likely to advance research."

And while people in advanced economies still use the internet more and own more high-tech gadgets, the rest of the emerging world is catching up."

    "The OAPEN-UK final report summarises the main findings from the OAPEN-UK research project, a five-year study into open access monograph publishing in the humanities and social sciences. OAPEN-UK was designed to work collaboratively and in an agile manner, supporting and responding to developments in the wider monograph publishing environment. Detailed research findings have been published throughout the project and are available in the research findings section of the website. This report provides an overview of those findings, summarising the key messages and recommendations from the project and its many sub-reports."

The workshop brought together some of the best thinkers on this topic and resulted in a research methodology for this project, also funded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and conducted by Ithaka S+R from January through November 2015. This research project takes on a fundamental question at the heart of any potential new model to support OA monographs: What does it cost to create and disseminate them?"

    "The series is intended as an advanced introduction to specific issues for those charged with establishing or running services for long term access. They identify and track developments in IT, standards and tools which are critical to digital preservation activities.     "The BIRNDL 2016 workshop is a joint scientific event gathering scholars from the BIR (Bibliometric-enhanced Information Retrieval) and the NLPIR4DL (Text and citation analysis for scholarly digital libraries) communities. The scope of BIRNDL is on scholarly publications and data - the explosion in the production of scientific literature and the growth of scientific enterprise; its consistent exponential growth approaches an empirical law.   • 8th International Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Information Retrieval - KDIR 2016, 9 - 11 November 2016, Porto, Portugal. Call for Papers. The submission deadline is 12 May 2016.

    "Knowledge Discovery is an interdisciplinary area focusing upon methodologies for identifying valid, novel, potentially useful and meaningful patterns from data, often based on underlying large data sets. A major aspect of Knowledge Discovery is data mining, i.e. applying data analysis and discovery algorithms that produce a particular enumeration of patterns (or models) over the data. Knowledge Discovery also includes the evaluation of patterns and identification of which add to knowledge. Information retrieval (IR) is concerned with gathering relevant information from unstructured and semantically fuzzy data in texts and other media, searching for information within documents and for metadata about documents, as well as searching relational databases and the Web. Automation of information retrieval enables the reduction of what has been called 'information overload'. Information retrieval can be combined with knowledge discovery to create software tools that empower users of decision support systems to better understand and use the knowledge underlying large data sets."

    "Knowledge Engineering (KE) refers to all technical, scientific and social as-pects involved in building, maintaining and using knowledge-based systems. KE is a multidisciplinary field, bringing in concepts and methods from several computer science domains such as artificial intelligence, databases, expert systems, decision support systems and geographic information systems. Ontology Development (OD) aims at building reusable semantic structures that can be informal vocabularies, catalogs, glossaries as well as more complex finite formal structures representing the entities within a domain and the relationships between those entities. Ontologies, have been gaining interest and acceptance in computational audiences: formal ontologies are a form of software, thus software development methodologies can be adapted to serve ontology development.
