Point-to-Point

• National Library Catalogues Worldwide, prepared and maintained by John W. East, University of Queensland Library. This is an annotated set of links to more than 30 libraries. Entries describe the collection, providing login and other information necessary to access the collections.

• American Treasures of the Library of Congress represents the cumulative version of a rotating exhibit at the Library of Congress. Currently, the site hosts digital representations of 200 items from the Library's collections, including the a draft of the Declaration of Independence in Thomas Jefferson's handwriting; early baseball cards, Maya Lin's designs for the Vietnam Veterans' Memorial, and Jelly Roll Morton's early compositions.

• OPAC 97 is a free service that allows users to search the catalogs for major Reference and Document Supply collections of the British Library via the web. The site also includes information on using the Library's various for-payment document delivery mechanisms. Among collections represented are: Modern books and periodicals from Britain and overseas; Humanities and Social Sciences collection (1975- ); Science, Technology and Business collection (1975-); OPAC 97 Music collection (1980- ); Older books and periodicals from Britain and overseas; OPAC 97 Older reference material collection (to 1975 only). The site serves as a guide to using the collections, providing information on reading rooms, hours, and access.

• The National Gallery of Art offers tours of selected collections and permits users to search the collection by author, title, and subject. The presentation of the images embeds them in descriptions of the work, which may include information on the artist, subject, and/or medium. Collections may also be "browsed". This provides a description of the collection (e.g., American Art) as an introduction to the tours that have been assembled.

• The SchoolNet Digital Collections Program is a bilingual English/French site providing alphabetical access to on-line holdings of over 100 Canadian archives, libraries, museums, associations, businesses, labor unions and other organizations from tours of Acadia to description of military uniforms. This multimedia portrait of Canada is created under contract to Industry Canada's SchoolNet DigitalCollections (SDC) program. SchoolNet is a joint government/industry program intended to encourage elementary and secondary school students and teachers to use the Internet, and to enhance educational opportunities by making national and international resources more widely available.

• The Arts and Humanities Data Service (AHDS) comprises the Archaeology Data Service, the History Data Service, the Oxford Text Archive, the Performing Arts Data Service, and the Visual Arts Data Service. The AHDS offers a common set of services and standards across and within these domains, which includes registry and deposit, guides to creation and use of digital data, and access. Via the site, users can search catalogs of the different collections. As part of its cultural heritage function, the service encourages development of shared cataloging standards of the various data and artifact types.

• Finding Information on the Internet: A Tutorial provides an on-line tutorial in searching the Internet based on the experience of the Teaching Library at the University of California at Berkeley. Part of the tutorial are a basic introduction to the Internet and the World Wide Web and a glossary of terms and jargon.

• The Hyperproceedings of the Sixth Annual World Wide Web Conference, held in Santa Clara, California, April 7-11, 1997 have been posted. Access is provided via a table of contents, author and titles indexes, and a forms-based search capability. The table of contents reflects the organization of sessions, which broadly fell into three groups: content, graphical user interfaces, and technical.

• Electronic Resources Review covers CD-ROMS, electronic journals and on-line resources of potential interest to acquisitions librarians. Products are described according to five criteria: installation, content, search/navigability, user information, and evaluation. Subscription includes a current awareness service. Example reviews are available at the home page.

• Project ACORN (Access to Course Readings via Networks) has posted several new reports, which address copyright, design, and recent developments. See What's New" for the recent work; the home page provides basic project information.

Goings On

• First European Conference on Research and Advanced Technology for Digital Libraries, September 1-3, 1997, Pisa, Italy. Call for Participation.

  The conference will bring together researchers from multiple disciplines whose science relates to the development of digital libraries; enable review and discussion of research under way in Europe, the USA, Japan, and other countries on digital libraries; stimulate researchers, especially young scientists, to explore new areas of interest in digital library development; establish a forum for discussion of issues specific to Europe such as interoperability, multilinguality and intellectual property policy and information commerce.

  Programme

  The Conference will be held at the Palazzo dei Congressi in Pisa. Full details on the scientific programme of the Conference will published on our Web site by 1 July 1997. Demos of on-going DL activities will be given by some of the most important US, European Union and national initiatives. The Proceedings will be published by Springer as a volume in their Lecture Notes in Computer Science series and will be distributed at the Conference.

  Tutorials

  A tutorial day will be held immediately before the Conference on Sunday, 31 August 1997. The aim is to give participants at the Conference the chance to become better acquainted with some of the most relevant areas in DL related research. A series of tutorials have thus been organised by experts in the following fields.

  • Knowledge Management, Information Gathering and Digital Libraries
  • Thesauri for knowledge-based assistance in searching digital libraries
  • Multimedia Information Retrieval
  • Systematic Design of Hypermedia Applications
  • Metadata
  • Speech Retrieval: Retrieving Information from Large Audio Databases
  • Systematic Evaluation of Hypermedia Usability

  Tutorials will be guaranteed if a minimum of ten participants are registered by 31 July 1997.

  Fellowships for Young Researchers

  A limited number of fellowships are available to support the participation at the Conference of young researchers that are citizens of European Union countries, Liechtenstein, Norway, or Iceland.

• Demystifying Subject Cataloging of Electronic Resources, June 26 - 27, 1997, will be presented by the Cataloging and Classification Section, Subject Analysis Committee as part of the pre-conference activities at the American Library Association Annual Meeting, San Francisco, California.

• Preconference Forum: Content Selection, PICS, and the Internet, June 27, 1997, San Francisco, California. This four-hour session is sponsored jointly by the OCLC Office of Research, ALA Office for Intellectual Freedom, and the World Wide Web Consortium. The forum will cover technical issues associated with access, content description, and existing library practice with a focus on the framework set forth by the PICS (Platform for Internet Content Selection) Working Group.

• From Catalog to Gateway: URIs, Metadata, and the Dublin Core, June 29, 1997, San Francisco, California. Four speakers will address basic issues in Uniform Resource Identifiers, Metadata, the DublinCore, and their implications for bibliographic access. The importance of the library community's participation in the development of these frameworks, specifications, and technologies will be discussed.

• LIBER - Ligue des Bibliotheques Europeennes de Recherche Annual General Conference 1997, Pre-Conference: "The Berne Convention in the Digital Age: What will happen after the WIPO Conference December 1996?" July 1, 1997 Bern. A panel of distinguished speakers will address conclusions and implications of The 1997 LIBER Pre-Conference will deal with the conclusions of the recent World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Conference on copyright, and the WIPO Copyright Treaty of December 1996 at the 1997 LIBER Pre-conference. Additional information is available at the web site.

• New Tricks 2: eLib and Telematics: Projects and Partnerships, August 27-29, 1997, Bournemouth University Library and Information Services Conference (BULISC '97) will assemble representatives from both eLib and Telematics Programmes together with demonstrations and presentations on current research.

• Information Seeking in Context (ISIC 98), Sheffield, UK. Call for papers closes September 1, 1997. Topics of interest at this biennial conference include:
  • Information Behaviour and Electronic Environments
  • Information Requirements and Information Systems Design
  • Theoretical and methodological issues
  • Information Seeking in an Educational, Business and Health Sectors
  • Longitudinal Studies
  Contributions are sought from related disciplines such as Marketing, Consumer Studies, Media Studies, Communication Studies, Information Systems and Computer Science.

• The Fourth International Conference on Hypermedia and Interactivity in Museums, September 1-5 1997, Le Mus�e du Louvre, Paris, France will comprise two days of pre-conference workshops and events, followed by three days of presentations on multimedia publications, geographic information and the World Wide Web.

• Hypertext - Information Retrieval - Multimedia (HIM'97), September 29 - October 2, 1997, Dortmund, Germany is sponsored in cooperation with the German Informatics Society (GI), the Austrian Computer Society (OCG), and the Swiss Informaticians Society. Papers will not be announced until after July 1, 1997, but current information is maintained at the web site.
