Streamlining Book Metadata Workflow, by Judy Luther (Informed Strategies), commissioned by NISO and OCLC, June 30, 2009.
From the Abstract: "The white paper was commissioned by NISO and OCLC as a follow-up to the Symposium for Publishers and Librarians held by OCLC on March 18-19, 2009 to discuss book metadata. This paper analyzes the current state of metadata creation, exchange, and use throughout the book supply chain. With the number of book formats multiplying and the amount of digital content growing rapidly, the metadata required to support the discovery, sale, and use of content by a global audience is increasing exponentially. At the same time economic pressures on all stakeholders in the supply chain from publishers, wholesalers, booksellers, metadata vendors, and librarians present greater challenges to providing quality and comprehensive metadata at every point in the cycle. Through interviews with over 30 industry representatives, Luther has created a book metadata exchange map illustrating the process and has identified opportunities for eliminating redundancies and making the entire process more efficient."

"This document provides guidelines for the creation of Dublin Core Application Profiles. The document explains the key components of a Dublin Core Application Profile and walks through the process of developing a profile. The document is aimed at designers of application profiles – people who will bring together metadata terms for use in a specific context. It does not address the creation of machine-readable implementations of an application profile nor the design of metadata applications in an broader sense. "In June 2009 a study was completed that had been commissioned by Knowledge Exchange and written by Professor John Houghton, Victoria University, Australia. This report on the study was titled: 'Open Access - What are the economic benefits? A comparison of the United Kingdom, Netherlands and Denmark.' This report was based on the findings of studies in which John Houghton had modelled the costs and benefits of Open Access in three countries. These studies had been undertaken in the UK by JISC, in the Netherlands by SURF and in Denmark by DEFF."

"The research on information access and retrieval aims at modelling, designing, implementing and evaluating systems that provide a fast and effective content-based access to a large amount of multimedia information. One main issue of such systems is to estimate the relevance of documents to user information needs. This is a very hard and complex task due to several reasons that a large volume of research has attempted to analyse and tackle, among which the subjective and multi-aspect nature of relevance. Information access technologies and IR in particular, are currently being used in many different application contexts that go far beyond the initial scope of their design. The application of models and techniques proposed and tested in standard experimental contexts to new application areas is a very challenging task that we believe is worth of great attention by the researchers. Nowadays, research in information access includes document indexing, document classification and categorization, system architecture, user interfaces, information visualisation, query languages, topic detection, management of multi-lingual information, content indexing of audio-visual information, collaborative searching, etc. This special track is the ninth edition in the context of SAC and is concerned with the theory, implementation and evaluation of information access and retrieval technologies to novel application areas and novel contexts. "This special issue of the journal Future Internet seeks papers reporting high quality theoretical or empirical studies of Web information behavior. Web technologies seek to support people's information behavior.
