Streamlining Book Metadata Workflow, by Judy Luther (Informed Strategies), commissioned by NISO and OCLC, June 30, 2009.
From the Abstract: "The white paper was commissioned by NISO and OCLC as a follow-up to the Symposium for Publishers and Librarians held by OCLC on March 18-19, 2009 to discuss book metadata. This paper analyzes the current state of metadata creation, exchange, and use throughout the book supply chain. With the number of book formats multiplying and the amount of digital content growing rapidly, the metadata required to support the discovery, sale, and use of content by a global audience is increasing exponentially. At the same time economic pressures on all stakeholders in the supply chain from publishers, wholesalers, booksellers, metadata vendors, and librarians present greater challenges to providing quality and comprehensive metadata at every point in the cycle. Through interviews with over 30 industry representatives, Luther has created a book metadata exchange map illustrating the process and has identified opportunities for eliminating redundancies and making the entire process more efficient."

Guidelines for Dublin Core Application Profiles, by Karen Coyle and Thomas Baker, published by the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative, May 18, 2009.
"This document provides guidelines for the creation of Dublin Core Application Profiles. The document explains the key components of a Dublin Core Application Profile and walks through the process of developing a profile. The document is aimed at designers of application profiles people who will bring together metadata terms for use in a specific context. It does not address the creation of machine-readable implementations of an application profile nor the design of metadata applications in an broader sense. For additional technical detail the reader is pointed to further sources."

Data Management Plan Content Checklist Draft Template for Consultation, by Martin Donnelly (University of Edinburgh) and Sarah Jones (University of Glasgow) © Digital Curation Centre, 2009.
From the Introduction: "Funders increasingly require their grant-holders to produce data management plans.1 This content template draws upon their requirements to suggest 'preliminary' and 'full' versions of a data management plan. The preliminary version summarises the main issues most research funders expect researchers to address at the application stage. The full version extends the core sections with additional details that are required by one or two funders, as well as contextual details that could be included as best practice. Core sections required in the preliminary version are marked in bold."

M-Libraries: Information use on the move: A report from the Arcadia Programme, by Keren Mills, published by the University of Cambridge, May 28, 2009.
From the Executive Summary: "Developing m-library [mobile-library] services is usually expensive and resource intensive, requiring expertise that existing library staff may not have. Before committing funding and staff time to such projects, it is important to try and ensure, as far as possible, that such investments are targeted at meeting actual needs, and are adding value to existing library services. The Information Use on the Move project was undertaken in that spirit - to scope the information requirements of academic library users on the move in order to inform future development of library services to mobile devices. The aim was to identify trends in the way people currently interact with information using their mobile phones, and then extrapolate ways that libraries could support those mobile information needs."

25th ACM Symposium on Applied Computing (SAC 2010) Special Track on: Information Access and Retrieval , 22 - 26 March 2030, Sierre, Switzerland. Call for papers. The submission deadline is 8 September 2009.
"The research on information access and retrieval aims at modelling, designing, implementing and evaluating systems that provide a fast and effective content-based access to a large amount of multimedia information. One main issue of such systems is to estimate the relevance of documents to user information needs. This is a very hard and complex task due to several reasons that a large volume of research has attempted to analyse and tackle, among which the subjective and multi-aspect nature of relevance. Information access technologies and IR in particular, are currently being used in many different application contexts that go far beyond the initial scope of their design. The application of models and techniques proposed and tested in standard experimental contexts to new application areas is a very challenging task that we believe is worth of great attention by the researchers. Nowadays, research in information access includes document indexing, document classification and categorization, system architecture, user interfaces, information visualisation, query languages, topic detection, management of multi-lingual information, content indexing of audio-visual information, collaborative searching, etc. This special track is the ninth edition in the context of SAC and is concerned with the theory, implementation and evaluation of information access and retrieval technologies to novel application areas and novel contexts. We invite submission of original research contributions, and experimentations in emerging fields such as Geographic Information Retrieval, Collaborative search and retrieval, User Interfaces for information access, presentation, and exploration, information retrieval on the Web. University of Maryland Center for Intellectual Property Online Workshop - Copyright Education Programs: Teaching the Ethical and Legal Use of Information, 14 - 25 September 2009. (This is an online conference. Register by September 7.)
"The introduction and application of information literacy curriculum and the quickened pace in legislative changes to the U.S. copyright law, has highlighted the need for faculty and students to broaden their knowledge of how information is produced and consumed inside and outside of the academy. Copyright sits squarely in the center of this academic enterprise: from teaching and the course materials purchased, licensed, or borrowed; to the ownership and authorship of faculty research, etc. Who has the responsibility of teaching this broader understanding of copyright issues? What do instructors need to know about copyright for their own scholarship and publications? What do they need to know to direct the work product of their students? What do students need to know to become responsible researchers, creators, and authors?"
