Contexts and Contributions: Building the Distributed Library, Martha L. Brogan, Digital Library Federation, Washington, D.C. 2006.

"Abstract: The Networked Reference Services Question/Answer Transaction Protocol covers processing transactions for interchange of messages between digital reference domains. It defines a set of messages and associated rules of syntax and semantics for this interchange that will support processing and routing of questions and responses and packaging of other information to be exchanged. Metadata element sets needed to identify and describe key components of both question and answer data and institutional and personal data are defined, although some sets are maintained outside the standard."

The Report of the East of England Digital Preservation Project, published jointly by the East of England Regional Archive Council (EERAC) and MLA East of England. 2006.
"The report describes a pilot project designed to investigate the issues which would need to be resolved if a regional digital repository were set up, and the costs which would arise from this. The report presents the results of two years' work and is probably the first realistic attempt to point the way forward. Taking as its starting point the anticipated needs of local authorities, the report looks in detail at the processes and costs involved in preserving and managing digital records of the types routinely dealt with by local authority records managers and archivists, including privately deposited material."

"Installing and institutionalising document and publication repositories at universities creates the opportunity to archive scholarly publications that were produced at the respective universities and to offer them to a worldwide audience. This new service offered by libraries and computing centres as infrastructure facilities helps disseminate the idea of electronic publishing as a new tool for academic work. DINI, the Deutsche Initiative für Netzwerkinformation (German Initiative for Network Information), supports this to reach a higher level of scientific and scholarly communication both nationally and internationally....The 'DINI-Certificate Document and Publication Services' includes current international developments, describes how Document and Publication Services support the open-access publication of scholarly documents, and shows how as Institutional Repositories they can position themselves in their respective institutions, especially with regard to supporting scholars and scientists to make pre and post prints of their documents available that have already been published by publishing houses – free of time or space constraints."

"This is the eleventh anniversary of the Conservation Awards, sponsored by Sir Paul McCartney, and is the third year to include the prestigious Digital Preservation Award, which recognises the many new initiatives being carried out by museums, libraries, galleries and archives in the challenging field of digital preservation."
"To be eligible for the Digital Preservation Award, a project must demonstrate leadership and advancement in digital preservation which will benefit the UK. It must focus on preserving digital materials (whether "born digital" or digitised copies), rather than on the use of digitisation as a preservation reformatting tool. "Building on work supported under the multi-agency Digital Libraries Initiative, this program aims to establish a national digital library that will constitute an online network of learning environments and resources for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education at all levels. The program has three tracks: (1) Pathways projects are expected to provide stewardship for the content and services needed by major communities of learners. (2) Services projects are expected to develop services that support users, resource collection providers, and the Core Integration effort and that enhance the impact, efficiency, and value of the library. (3) Targeted Research projects are expected to explore specific topics that have immediate applicability to collections, services, and other aspects of the development of the digital library. In FY2007 the program will only accept proposals in the Pathways track and specific components of the Services track. The program will also accept proposals for small grants that extend or enhance results from existing services, collections, or targeted research activity so as to enlarge the user audience for NSDL or improve capabilities for the user."
