"The Library of Congress and the National Science Foundation hosted a workshop to identify specific research challenges associated with long-term preservation of digital content. From the abstract to the report: "To what extent have recent library design projects been driven by an understanding of how students learn and how faculty teach? To find out, Yale Librarian Emeritus Scott Bennett conducted an extensive study of the motivations and planning methods for library renovation and construction projects undertaken between 1992 and 2001. His study entailed a Web-based survey of more than 380 institutions, and phone interviews with 31 library directors and chief academic officers. He concludes that while most of the projects are serving users well, they have rarely been informed by a systematic assessment of how students learn and faculty teach. The author suggests that planning based on such an assessment could equip the library to serve an even more vital function as a space for teaching and learning."

Evaluation of Digital Cultural Content: Analysis of evaluation material, Final version, November 3, 2003. Alice Grant Consulting for the Digital Cultural Content Forum.
This review "has found strong evidence that there is an emerging consensus for the use of common user profiles across the [cultural heritage] sector, but that the development of any standard profiles should reflect the need for multiple attributes to be assigned to groups of users....A number of measures are proposed...including work to achieve a consensus on user profiles and the agreement of sector-specific guidelines for good practice in undertaking evaluation projects."

Networked Data Services; Towards a Future Data Infrastructure for the Social Sciences in the Netherlands, Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences Amsterdam, September 2003.
"The availability and accessibility of the databases used by researchers in the social sciences need to be improved. A number of 'expertise centres' should be set up at Dutch research institutes as well as a national centre for data services that brings together providers of data. These are among the recommendations in an advisory report on a new and improved data infrastructure for the social sciences that has been compiled by the Social Sciences Council of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (SWR-KNAW)."

As announced in the Digital Preservation listserv: "The report notes E-Prints themselves are not distinguished from other digital material collected by libraries or archives by any unique technical characteristics. The file formats, metadata requirements and software applications used to manage and view e-prints can all be used to manage and disseminate other forms of digital content. The report may therefore be of interest to a broader range of institutional repositories and activities."

Abstract to the document: "Governments are recommended to enhance interoperability among their networked systems by adopting a common search service. The search service should be based on the ISO 23950 international standard that features a high degree of interoperability across many communities of practice and types of data and information holdings. Governments should implement the search service as a supplement to other search mechanisms, as these may be required for reasons other than broad scale interoperability."

"On October 14 and 15, 2003, the NAE held a public workshop, 'Emerging Technologies and Ethical Issues', with three objectives: 1) to describe directions of development of these emerging technologies; 2) to review the state of the art in engineering ethics in search of strategies and tools for addressing these emerging technologies; and 3) to address questions as to what engineers and engineering professional organizations, such as the NAE, can and should do to ensure that these technologies are developed in socially responsible ways." Excerpt from the Abstract to the report: "The Collaboratory for Annotation, Indexing and Retrieval of Digitized Historical Archive Material (Collate) is intended to foster and support collaboration on research, cultural mediation and preservation of films through a distributed multimedia repository. The tool will provide web-based tools and interfaces for collaborative work and content-based access to digital repositories for film archives, researchers and end-users. This report is based on empirical analysis of three film archives in Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic, and seeks to elicit the user needs for a collaboratory in this domain....The approach adopted in this report is...one that seeks to suggest implications for the implementation of a collaboratory system according to the organisation of the archives."
