About the above image:

Illustrations from "Tangent Planes," an experiment in using the World Wide Web to illustrate the intuitive notion of the tangent plane to a graph of a function of two variables, by E. Klotz and E. Magness. One of a series of Web Units hosted by The Math Forum at:

About the Julia set image below:

"If you consider complex numbers rather than real numbers, it is the complex plane that is partitioned into two sets, and the resulting picture can be quite striking. For instance, here is a Julia set for the function f(z) = z2 - 0.75." David E. Joyce, Dept. of Mathematics and Computer Science, Clark University.

The Math Forum:
Internet Mathematics Library

http://forum.swarthmore.edu/library/

The Math Forum has collected and catalogued sites on the World Wide Web since 1994, in a continuing effort to make available to students, mathematicians and math teachers the resources that will enrich their work. Entries are annotated and organized by Mathematics Topic (from algebra and arithmetic to probability, statistics, and topology); Mathematics Education Topic (e.g. professional development, research and reform, social issues and public policy, teaching issues and strategies); Resource Type (educational materials, organizations, publications, reference sources, software, etc.); and Education Level (elementary, middle school, high school, college, and research).

The Forum's Math Library is searchable and browseable in over 350 categories with close to 5,000 entries, and is constantly growing. Each of the main categories displays any subcategories within it, followed by annotated "selected sites" of special interest and then all of the remaining entries relevant to the specific category. Each entry has a link to the site along with a full Forum annotation and the ability to locate similar items. In addition, the library pages all contain a keyword searcher for the corresponding category, and menus of topics and resource types to further narrow the search.

The Math Forum encourages visitors to submit links for addition to the library via a submission form that is available from a menu at the top of every page, along with a full table of contents and power searcher to enable finer focus.

This library is one of the key supports for the Forum's interactive services, such as Ask Dr. Math and the Problems of the Week. It is also the basis for specific resource areas organized by grade level for teachers and students.
