The State of Digital Preservation: An International Perspective, Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR)
August 12, 2002. "WASHINGTON, D.C.—Leading experts from the United States, the Netherlands, and Australia describe current practices and challenges in digital preservation in a new publication from the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR). The publication, entitled The State of Digital Preservation: An International Perspective, is a collection of papers presented at a symposium of the same name held April 24-�25, 2002. The symposium, which CLIR organized with funding from Documentation Abstracts, Inc. (DAI), was the first in a series of DAI Institutes for Information Science."

Library Preservation and Conservation Tutorial
"Despite the best efforts of librarians and archivists to address problems of preservation at the local level, information on viable and practical preservation program development is not easy to find, and much that is available seems directed more towards affluent institutions. In many countries, it is difficult to find the model preservation programs on which librarians and archivists can build, and the necessary equipment and supplies are often hard to trace."
"CLIR and Cornell University will launch the first in a series of Web-based tutorials on preservation. John Dean and Anne Kenney of Cornell designed the initial tutorial for us in Southeast Asia, with the particular needs and challenges of that region in mind."
"The tutorial has four main parts: Preservation Management and Planning, Preservation, Building Capacity and Supporting the Effort. The narrative is illustrated by line drawings rather than photographs to avoid download delays. Much of the narrative presents new information on particular relevance to librarians and preservationists in tropical climates (e.g., passive climate control to avoid the need for air-conditioning and integrated pest management to avoid the need for chemical pesticides.) The tutorial also includes a glossary and information on how to contact local vendors."

CCS 2002: 9th ACM Conference on Computer and Communications Security, 18 - 22 November 2002, Washington, DC, USA.
"Papers offering novel research contributions in any aspect of computer security [were] solicited for submission to the Ninth ACM Conference on Computer and Communications Security. The primary conference focus is on high-quality original unpublished research, case studies, and implementation experiences. Papers [will] have practical relevance to the construction, evaluation, application, [and] operation of secure systems. Theoretical papers [will] make convincing argument for the practical significance of the results. Theory [will] be justified by compelling examples illustrating its application. The primary criterion for [paper] appropriateness for CCS [has been] demonstrated practical relevance. CCS has, therefore, rejected perfectly good papers that are appropriate for theory-oriented conferences."

There are challenges for us all - publishers, authors, librarians, national libraries, intermediaries and aggregators - in maintaining access to digital resources over time. This seminar will explore the issues for the community, through the viewpoints of the different elements of the scholarly/information chain."
"The ephemeral nature of web publication, allied to its dissemination possibilities, has added complexity to the archival function where little existed in print. Publications can get lost when technology changes, when the publisher changes or indeed when commercial imperatives dictate - and then whose job is it to preserve some reliable source data? - and in what format should that data be preserved? - are we, or our successors, to be interested in the actual content or in its 'form'? - and how will this all be paid for?...By its very nature the subject 'archiving' has become broad with multiple meanings and aspects. The seminar will focus on issues specific to long term archival preservation. While technical issues are rarely far from the surface, the seminar will concentrate on implementation, policy, licensing and business models."
