• E-Journal Archiving Metes and Bounds: A Survey of the Landscape, by Anne R. Kenney, Richard Entlich, Peter B. Hirtle, Nancy Y. McGovern, and Ellie L. Buckley, Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR), Pub 138, September 2006.

  From the Abstract: "his report summarizes a review of 12 e-journal archiving programs from the perspective of concerns expressed by directors of academic libraries in North America. It uses a methodology comparable to the art of surveying land by "metes and bounds" in the era before precise measures and calibrated instruments were available. It argues that current license arrangements are inadequate to protect a library's long-term interest in electronic journals, that individual libraries cannot address the preservation needs of e-journals on their own, that much scholarly e-literature is not covered by archiving arrangements, and that while e-journal archiving programs are becoming available, no comprehensive solution has emerged and large parts of e-literature go unprotected."

  "This report presents national and state data from the 2006 Public Libraries and the Internet survey and site visits funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the American Library Association. The primary goal of the study is to provide current information that describes public library activities in the networked environment. This information has importance not only to the public library community, but also to policymakers at local, state, and federal levels; manufacturers of information and communication technologies; library funding agencies; and the communities served by public libraries.   "ALCTS Outstanding Collaboration Citation recognizes and encourages collaborative problem-solving efforts in the areas of acquisition, access, management, preservation or archiving of library materials. It recognizes a demonstrated benefit from actions, services, or products that improve and benefit providing and managing library collections. The citation may be presented to two or more individuals or groups who have participated jointly in an appropriate achievement. Accomplishments that expose problems may be as valuable as successes. The citation will be presented in a year when an achievement of merit has occurred. Recognized forms of collaboration must be between library personnel and other individuals or groups such as: publishers, vendors, cultural organizations, government agencies, philanthropic organizations, and the like. Results of a collaborative effort must demonstrate advancement in collection management or technical services working environments."

  "The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) invites libraries, archives, and library agencies, associations, and consortia to apply for the Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian grant program. The program supports efforts to recruit and educate the next generation of librarians and the faculty who will prepare them for careers in library science. It also supports grants for research related to library education and library staffing needs, curriculum development, an early career development program for untenured, tenure-track library and information science faculty, and continuing education and training.
